A Weather App Without Ads, Trackers or Accounts
Most weather apps are free because you pay with your data: ads across the screen, trackers in the background, a location history on somebody else's server. Wetter Pur by Gemivo does the opposite: live maps like the big portals, without ads, without sign-up, without tracking.
What free weather apps really cost
Weather apps are among the hungriest for data in any store. The reason is the business model: the app is free, so it has to earn money with advertising and data. In practice that means banners and videos before every map view, advertising partners using weather for geo-marketing, and SDKs logging location, device and usage. On top comes the sign-up with email or account, so a profile can be built.
The weather itself is the smallest problem: the data almost always comes from the same few sources, whether the app tracks you or not. A weather app without ads is therefore not a sacrifice in features, only the provider's renunciation of your usage behavior.
Wetter Pur: live maps, widgets, nothing else
Wetter Pur shows the weather the way the big portals do: live maps for rain radar, clouds, wind and temperature, plus the hourly course and the 7-day trend. Severe weather warnings arrive as a push before the storm, not while it sits over your roof.
Up to three map widgets live directly on your home screen, plus a compact widget with clock and weather. That makes checking the weather possible without even opening the app, and without an ad slot coming along for the ride. Try it in the browser.
- Live maps: rain radar from DWD, clouds from satellite, wind and temperature
- Widgets: up to 3 live maps plus a compact clock-and-weather widget on the home screen
- Hourly & 7-day trend and severe weather warnings as push
- Sources: DWD, Open-Meteo and RainViewer, directly and without middlemen trackers
- No account, no tracking, no sharing. Promised, and part of the concept
Why no tracking is not a marketing line
Wetter Pur needs no account. There is nothing to sign up for because there are no profiles, and no location history because no ad network needs one. The app asks for your location to show the weather there, not to build a movement profile.
The rest is infrastructure: Wetter Pur runs on servers in Germany, as a PWA in the browser or as a standalone Android app. Remove the app and nothing remains, because nothing was stored. For a piece of information you check many times a day, that is a quiet thought.
During the beta, Wetter Pur is free. After that it becomes part of the gemivo subscription, the one subscription for all gemivo apps. Ads will not be added then either.
